Wolfgang Tillmans’ “Truth Study Center (NY)” (2010)

In the frenzied weeks of autumn 2010, we had the chance to “live with” artworks during the course of ten weeks while we live-edited a weekly tabloid that ultimately constituted the ten-part catalogue of “The Last Newspaper” (October 2010–January 2011) exhibition at the New Museum. For almost the entire duration of the show, Latitudes commissioned articles, opinion columns, adverts, interviews, and focus pieces, and also wrote about the featured artworks, artists, events, and issues covered (or missing!) in the exhibition we were embedded in.

For ”The Last Observer”, the sixth of the ten issues of “The Last Newspaper” (pdf here), we commissioned then-writer Lorena Muñoz-Alonso to interview artist Wolfgang Tillmans about his work “Truth Study Center (NY)” (2010). Tillmans’ work shared the floor with our temporary office and is a project he began in 2005 with a show at his London gallery Maureen Paley.

Forward ten years. In 2021, the interview “Is This True or Not?” was included in the 352-page reader “Wolfgang Tillmans: A Reader” (ISBN 9781633451124), published on the occasion of his
 retrospective “To Look Without Fear” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and edited by Roxana Marcoci and Phil Taylor – see pages 171 to 173.

We recently received a request to use our Tillmans’s New Museum installation photograph in the highly anticipated publication “Disordered Attention: How We Look at Art and Performance” (Verso Books
by our former teacher, and now professor in the Ph.D. Program in Art History at CUNY Graduate Center in New YorkDr. Claire Bishop

In “Disordered Attention...”, Bishop “identifies trends in contemporary practice – research-based installations, performance exhibitions, interventions, and invocations of modernist architecture – and their challenges to traditional modes of attention. Charting a critical path through the last
three decades, Bishop pinpoints how spectatorship and visual literacy are evolving under the pressures of digital technology.”

The book will be available from June 2024. An excerpt was published in Artforum in April 2023, titled “Information Overload”.

Conferencia sobre “A Knot Which is Not” de Eulàlia Rovira en Palma, Mallorca

El pasado 11 de noviembre 2023, la artista Laia Ventayol presentó en Palma, Mallorca, una conferencia sobre el video “A knot which is not” de Eulàlia Rovira en el marco del LXVIII Anglo-Catalan Society Conference en la Universitat de les Illes Balears. 

A knot which is not” [Un nudo que no lo es] (2020–21) fue fruto de una investigación que se inició con la inauguración de la exposición “Cosas que las cosas dicen” (17 de octubre 2020–17 de enero 2021, véase el trailer) comisariada por Latitudes en Fabra i Coats: Centre d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, y que se proyectó en línea una vez clausuró la exposición. 

Concebimos la participación de Rovira en la exposición como meta narradora de la misma. Su voz acompañó a los visitantes al inicio de la exposición – Eulàlia fue la voz de la audioguía – y a su cierre – con la presentación del video A knot which is not”, filmado en la sala expositiva una vez volvía a estar vacía.

“Si bien la línea recta es cómplice del abaratamiento y el estandarización de muchos productos, ¿a dónde nos lleva la curva, o todavía mejor, el nudo? Dando giros a las historias de la propia fábrica textil de la Fabra i Coats y a los objetos que de allí salían, la lengua que nos habla ejercita palabras que las manos parecen haber dejado de reconocer.” – Eulàlia Rovira

En la conferencia, Ventayol ha compartido imágenes del proceso de investigación que realizó Rovira para la elaboración de la narración de “A Knot Which is Not” (2021), así como sobre la colaboración que Stuart Whipps, otro artista de la exposición que exhibió The Kipper and the Corpse” (2004–en curso), entabló con Keith Woodfield, quien trabajó en la empresa motora British Leyland en Longbridge (Birmingham) durante +30 años.

he publication “Sketches of Transition. An Atlas on Growth and Decay” brings together the practices of five different artists in relation to the key concept of transition. 

Edited by Italian-born, Amsterdam-based artist 
Michele Bazzoli the book includes a reprint of Latitudes’ text on Lara Almarcegui’s project “Graves” originally commissioned to accompany her solo exhibition at Centre d’Art la Panera, Lleida, curated by Cèlia del Diego and on view between February and June 2021.

Gazing through various apertures of “Sketches of Transition”’s featured researches, each chapter could be considered a sketch of transition in itself, as an annotation on an alternative perspective on the material and visual spheres of our existences. With the same freedom of sketching on a blank paper sheet, the contributions investigate and probe new modes of production of beauty and wonder.

Latitudes’ text presents the two new projects Almarcegui produced for her solo exhibition at Centre d'Art la Panera. “Rocas y Materiales de la Cordillera de los Pirineos” (2021) was an austere ordered list presented as a large wall text detailing the quantities of rocks and materials that constitute the Pyrenees (two images below).

The second work, “Gravera” (2021), was a large video projection documenting the industrial complex operated by Sorigué near the town of Balaguer, which temporarily stopped operations for a day (images of the public programme organised during the exhibition below). 

(Above and below) “Gravera aturada” was an event organised by the Centre d'Art la Panera, Lleida, on 19 February 2021, as part of Lara Almarcegui’s solo exhibition. For the occasion, citizens were able to take a tour around Sorigué’s gravel mining and processing plant near Balaguer, which stopped its activity for a day. Photos Jordi V. Pou.

    The Pilgrim from Askeaton

    The Pilgrim” is a pilot exchange programme linking Barcelona with southwest Ireland, Latitudes with the organisation Askeaton Contemporary Arts), and Ruth Clinton & Niamh Moriarty with Catalan artist Eulàlia Rovira
    Throughout 2023, two artist residencies and a public programme enhance new artistic and curatorial research and creates new possibilities for international collaboration around ideas of pilgrimage, relics, and twinning.

    The Pilgrim’s curatorial framework derives from an extraordinary story from over two centuries ago. It is recalled that a Barcelona merchant named Don Martínez de Mendoza, one of the wealthiest men in Catalonia during the mid-1700s, murdered his son-in-law to avenge the death of his daughter in childbirth in a Barcelona convent years before. Don Martínez ended up living his last sixteen years as a pilgrim in penance in Askeaton, Co. Limerick. A cryptic inscription can still be found in the cloister of Askeaton Friary: “Beneath lies the Pilgrim’s Body, who died January 17, 1784”.

    Throughout the Spring of 2023, Latitudes researched documentation in the Arxiu Històric de la Ciutat de Barcelona (Casa de l'Ardiaca) with the hopes of finding evidence of Askeaton's Pilgrim, browsing certificates of docking in the Port of Barcelona, licenses of the board of health, details of boat captain promotion, health patents, and plague-free certificates. With little to no factual data on Askeaton’s Pilgrim – besides his name (Don Martínez de Mendoza), his date of death (Askeaton, 1784), that he was a Barcelona merchant from the mid-18th Century who had a flagship called Isabella, and a daughter called Beatrice (Beatriz? Beatriu?) – we weren't able to find further evidence of his existence.

    In May 2023, Irish artists Ruth Clinton & Niamh Moriarty presented their work as part of their two-week residency in Barcelona alongside project co-curators Michele Horrigan and Sean Lynch from Askeaton Contemporary Arts who discussed their programme through the publications they have produced since 2006.

    During Clinton & Moriarty’s May visit to Barcelona, they were considering “spaces that share a historic Catholic faith; places and relics that are similarly ‘touched by celebrity’, or a dramatic, salacious story; journeys of personal discovery ... and fallen idols” and visited Montserrat Mountain and church, Christopher Columbus’s Monument on Les Rambles; the steps where Columbus was allegedly received by the Catholic Kings in Plaça del Rei, as well as the crypt where Santa Eulàlia (the co-patron of Barcelona) is entombed in the Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia

    In late August 2023, the second cohort of pilgrims, aka the artist Eulàlia Rovira and project co-curators Latitudes, traveled to Dublin, Sligo, Askeaton, and Limerick. The diary was filled with activities: a visit to the Irish Architecture Archive and the “bog bodies” in Dublin’s National Museum; hikes to Carrowkeel Passage Tombs in Co. Sligo; a tour of the Holycross Abbey by stonemason Philip Quinn in Co. Tipperary; a tour of The Rock of Cashel and the Ardnacrusha Power Station in Co. Clare; a visit to the Flying Boat Museum and Maritime Museum in Foynes and Anthony Sheehy’s tour of Askeaton’s former Franciscan Friary in Co. Limerick; as well as the opening events of the 40th EVA International biennial in Limerick.

    On Rovira’s first visit to Askeaton, she became captivated by the rapid tide of the river Deel as it runs through the town and reflected on the human and natural engineering of the Shannon Estuary – canal locks, hydroelectric power stations, and numerous bridges.
